California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) is seeking a Junior User Experience (UX) Designer (Information Technology Associate) to join the Enterprise Solutions Development Division within the UX and Information Design Unit. In this role, you’ll contribute to designing intuitive, accessible, and user-centered digital experiences that support millions of members and stakeholders.
As a Junior UX Designer, you will support and collaborate with cross-functional teams to review, design, and enhance user experiences across CalPERS’ digital platforms, including myCalPERS Member Self-Service, CalPERS public website, and the CalPERS Intranet. You’ll help translate complex requirements into thoughtful design solutions, contribute to usability improvements, and play a key role in delivering innovative, user-focused applications that improve how people interact with essential services.
Telework Information: This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with up to two days of remote work and three days or more onsite, per week.
Sponsorship This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for visa sponsorship. CalPERS does not participate in E-Verify for employment authorization purposes.
Effective July 1, 2025, The California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025). PLP 2025 directs that each employee shall receive a 3 percent reduction in pay in exchange for 5 hours PLP 2025 leave credits, monthly. Statement of Qualifications

The SOQ must be typed, titled “Statement of Qualifications,” and each response must be numbered and list all relevant experience, education, and training, including places of employment, dates, and duties performed. The SOQ must not exceed two pages in length.
- Describe your experience translating concepts into user-centered design deliverables.Include examples of how you have created user flows, wireframes, or prototypes, and how your work improved usability, navigation, or overall user interaction for web or digital applications.
- Explain your approach to applying human-centered design throughout the product lifecycle.Provide specific examples of user research, usability testing, or UX validation you have conducted, and how your findings influenced design decisions and final outcomes.
- Share an example of how you collaborated with cross-functional teams (e.g., developers, business analysts, or stakeholders) to deliver a UX solution.Describe your role, the tools and methods you used, and how you ensured the final design met user needs, accessibility standards, and business goals.

Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
- Strong foundation in human-centered design, including user research, usability testing, A/B testing, rapid prototyping, and heuristic analysis.
- Experience writing effective web content and designing clear, intuitive navigation systems.
- Proficiency with Figma.
- Ability to collaborate with stakeholders and translate detailed requirements into end-to-end user experiences.
- Familiarity with public pension systems.
